JANE AUSTEN'S EMMA
Jane Austen’s
Emma tells the story of the rich and mischievous Emma Woodhouse,
and her relationship with
the aristocratic members of Highbury.
Emma is bold, kind at heart, but a bit immature, and these qualities
show
through as she unsuccessfully tries her hand at matchmaking.
Disrupting the lives of Harriet Smith, Jane
Fairax, and Mr. Elton among
others, Emma finds that her quick wit and imagination can be more trouble than
it’s worth. Often causing trouble,
Emma is forced to suffer the consequences of her questionable decisions,
but the
wise Mr. Knightly is by her side to provide guidance, and help Emma learn the
error of her ways.
Bound to never
marry, Emma fails to recognize the advances of Mr. Knightly, the only person not
dazed by
Emma’s high social position, but before long Emma warms to his gruff
exterior, recognizing the importance of
their relationship.
By the novel’s close Emma has grown from a girl into a woman, finding
love, and righting
her previous wrongs.
Austen’s Emma is rich
with details of 19th century England, and provides a peek inside
the
psychology of England’s highest society.
With a challenging protagonist, and a few twists and turns along
the way,
Jane Austen’s Emma is the perfect read for any gentleman or lady.
